Application Process

Filling in the Application Form

Dear Student,

Thank you for expressing an interest in applying to become a member of Holmes Chapel Sixth Form community. This letter should help to explain a few key points about the application and the sequence of events that will follow.

On the application form you will notice a space for writing the subjects you are interested in. The majority of students are expected to take FOUR subjects in Year 12. General Studies does not count as one of these choices. (In Year 13 you will usually drop one of these subjects to concentrate on the three remaining.) You are invited to express interest in up to six subjects as we understand your choices may change. You are not expected to make a final decision about your subjects until enrolment day, which is on 4th September, after your GCSE results have come out.

If it is the Foundation course you are interested in, write that in thie space for the subject choices.  You are not expectec to speficy subjects for the Foundation course at this stage.

You may not have made a final decision about where you want to continue your studies as yet. However, if you are considering Holmes Chapel Sixth Form Centre it is in your best interests to get an application in early, for three main reasons:

  • By telling me which AS level courses you are interested in I can take your combination of choices into account when I put the option blocks together.
  • You can be surer of reserving a place rather than hoping there are places left.
  • If your application is not accepted you will know at an early stage if you need to make alternative plans.

Submitting an application does not mean you have to come here, but it does increase your chances of having a place available to you with your preferred subject choices should this end up as your preferred destination. Please don’t just assume a place will be here for you! Notice also that I will want to see your completed personal statement so that I can find out more about you. We are confident in our status as a Sixth Form College of excellence and in order to maintain this we are looking for ambitious students who want the best for themselves and those around them.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask. In the meantime, all the best in your GCSE’s,

Mrs L A Gwinnett, Assistant Head and Head of Sixth Form

Sixth Form Application Procedure

  • Entry to Holmes Chapel Sixth Form is not  automatic; there is a very strict application procedure.
  • Only students who have a positive approach to learning and who are deemed capable of completing the courses they are applying for will be offered a place.
  • To be considered for a place at Holmes Chapel Sixth Form the following procedure must be followed:

September – November

  • Fill in a Holmes Chapel Sixth Form application form and return by Friday November 7th (form enclosed in prospectus pack). Option blocks will be constructed on the basis of the subject preferences expressed on these forms which is why it is important to get applications in early.
  • On receipt of an application form Mrs. Gwinnett will request references from tutors and subject staff about applicants’ suitability for Sixth Form

November – January

  • All Year 11 Holmes Chapel students will be interviewed by Mr. Oliver about their Post 16 intentions
  • Students applying to Holmes Chapel Sixth Form will also be interviewed by Mrs. Gwinnett (including external applicants)
  • Offers of places in our Sixth Form will then be notified to successful applicants which will also outline any conditions of entry as appropriate

N.B. Those who have not shown a positive approach to learning will not be offered a place until they can show this to be the case and will be told ‘no offer at this time’. This situation will be closely monitored

August - September

  • All successful applicants will receive an enrolment form with enrolment details in their GCSE results envelope in August. This form should be completed with final subject choices for consideration by Subject Leaders. These must be brought to enrolment
